The folk opera The Tale of Chun Hyang was created in Juche 77 (1988).
The work is composed of an overture, eight scenes in seven chapters and a finale.
The work, adapted from the classic novel The Tale of Chun Hyang on the principle of creating The Sea of Blood–style operas according to Chairman Kim Jong Il’s Juche-oriented plan for building folk operas, is a masterpiece that opened a new era of creation of Korean-style folk classical operas.
Through the love relations between Song Chun Hyang and Ri Mong Ryong, the work exposes that the source of their misfortune and mental agony is the caste system, stressing the idea that the anti-popular feudal system must be abolished.
